Best Food for Dogs
Share
Am often asked what should I feed our dog. Dogs eat everything!
Our dogs on the farm are fed a meat heavy diet. Dogs, like their wild ancestors, have evolved to eat a diet rich in animal protein. Although they can process some plant-based foods, their bodies are optimized for digesting and utilizing protein from meat. Here’s why meat is so important:
High-Quality Protein for Muscle Growth and Maintenance
Protein is crucial for your dog's muscle development, repair, and overall body function. Meat is a complete source of protein, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids your dog needs to stay healthy. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and they help maintain strong muscles, support immune function, and promote healthy skin and coat.
Essential Nutrients for Overall Health
Meat is rich in vital nutrients like iron, zinc, and B vitamins, which support various functions in your dog’s body:
Iron helps with red blood cell production and ensures proper oxygen transport.
Zinc boosts the immune system and aids in tissue repair.
B vitamins, like B12 and niacin, support metabolism, brain function, and nerve health.
These nutrients play a role in everything from your dog’s energy levels to their ability to fight off infections.
Natural Source of Healthy Fats
In addition to protein, meat provides a natural source of healthy fats. Fat is an important part of your dog’s diet because it provides energy, helps in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (like A, D, E, and K), and keeps their coat shiny and skin healthy.
Supports a Healthy Coat and Skin
If your dog has a dull coat or is suffering from skin issues, the lack of quality fats and proteins could be the problem. Animal proteins from meat contribute to healthy skin and coat by supplying the essential fatty acids and amino acids that help maintain a soft, shiny coat. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids found in meat also support inflammation regulation, reducing skin irritation and dryness.
Easier Digestion and Absorption
Dogs are well-equipped to digest meat, as their digestive systems are designed to break down animal proteins and fats efficiently. Compared to plant-based proteins, which can sometimes be more difficult for dogs to digest, meat is highly bioavailable, meaning your dog can absorb more nutrients from it. This leads to better digestion and overall health.
On our farm a meat based diet plays a crucial role in maintaining our dogs' health and vitality. With high-quality animal protein, essential fatty acids, and vital vitamins and minerals, meat supports everything from muscle growth to skin health and immune function. While there are other food sources that provide some nutritional value, meat remains the cornerstone of a balanced, nutritious dog diet.
